Mia's game-winning goal in the 62nd minute led the United States to victory over Sweden 3-2. The first game of the tournament was against Sweden. At the age of nineteen, Mia was once again the youngest person on the team. Having joined the national team at the age of fifteen, she was already accustomed to the type of play she would face when her name was put on the US roster for the 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup in China. Mia Hamm played a huge part in how female soccer is viewed in the US today. What she didn’t know, and never could have imagined is what would happen when she overcame those obstacles.

She knew that it wasn’t going to be easy and that there were going to be challenges along the way that would test her determination, but she was up for the challenge. She didn’t let her earlier handicap discourage her from becoming what she wanted to become-the best women’s soccer player in the United States. She was a natural and she knew it, so she set a goal for herself. From that day forward, she and her family have been involved in the sport. This was where Mia was first introduced to the game of soccer. Mia was only one at the time, but they lived there long enough for Mia to watch her first soccer match. They traveled all over, but the most significant trip was when they went to Italy.

Her father worked for the United States Air Force, and because of his work, the Hamm family had to do a lot of moving. Thankfully, she ended up making a full recovery. When she was a baby, Mia had a clubfoot and was required to wear a cast to fix it. Mia was born on Main Selma, Alabama to Stephanie and Bill Hamm.
